He played for the CSKA Moscow team in the Soviet League. People remember him as a very fast and smart player. He was a gifted skater who could move at top speed. Many people call him one of the greatest players of all time. He was known for being very creative while playing on the ice. He even won the league's most valuable player award in 1972 and 1973.

Kharlamov was part of a very famous group of players. He played on a line with Vladimir Petrov and Boris Mikhailov. This trio is considered one of the best in hockey history. To play well, they worked together as a team. Kharlamov also had to overcome hard times early in life. When he was five, he started skating by using his father's blades. As a young boy, he was often sick with rheumatic fever. He had to spend months in a hospital to get better.

His career grew through many big international games. He played in 11 World Championships for the Soviet Union. He won 8 gold medals, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze there. Kharlamov also played in three Winter Olympics. He won gold medals in 1972 and 1976. He won a silver medal at the 1980 Olympics. In 1972, he played in the famous Summit Series against Team Canada. He was the most valuable player in the first game of that series.

During the Summit Series, Kharlamov faced a very hard moment. In the sixth game, a player named Bobby Clarke slashed his ankle. This injury broke a bone and made it hard to play. Kharlamov felt the move was meant to stop him from playing well. He still returned to play in the final game of the series. Even with the injury, he was a star that the world noticed. Many experts later said he had the skill of any top player.

Sadly, Kharlamov died in a car accident in 1981.
