His skill and bravery made him a hero in the world of sports. He helped his country win many gold medals in major competitions.

Tretiak learned how to play through hard work and focus. He grew up in the USSR with a pilot father and a teacher mother. As a child, he was very ambitious and tried many different sports. He eventually joined the CSKA Moscow team at age eleven. He chose to be a goalie because he saw that others lacked the courage for it. This role requires great mental strength and quick reflexes. He practiced constantly to master the difficult moves needed to stop fast pucks.

His international career began with huge success in the early 1970s. He played in the 1972 Winter Olympics and won a gold medal. In that same year, he became famous during the Summit Series against Canada. Before that series, Canadian scouts did not expect him to be so good. He surprised them with his amazing ability to block shots. He also played for the powerhouse Red Army team. By age nineteen, he was already a star in the Soviet Ice Hockey League.

Tretiak won many impressive titles throughout his long career. He helped the Soviet Union win ten IIHF World Championships. He also won gold medals in the 1976 and 1984 Winter Olympics. In 1984, he retired after a victory over Czechoslovakia. He received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for his work. In 1989, he became the first Soviet player in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was even voted the best Russian hockey player of the 20th century.

After he stopped playing, Tretiak shared his knowledge with others. He worked as a goalie coach for the Chicago Blackhawks in 1990. He taught many famous NHL players how to play the position. Many goalies, like Ed Belfour, wore his number 20 to show respect. He also ran elite goalie schools in Canada and the United States. Today, he serves as the president of the Ice Hockey Federation of Russia. He even lit the Olympic flame during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
