He played for the Montreal Canadiens for 20 seasons. People often called him "Le Gros Bill." This nickname came from a famous movie from 1949. He was a star who helped his team win many times. He is remembered as a legend in the sport. He was even named one of the 100 greatest NHL players in history.

Béliveau learned to play hockey in a very special way. His family had a backyard ice rink in Quebec. He played there with his friends and neighbors until he was twelve. He also played baseball during the summer months. He was such a good baseball pitcher that his family turned down a pro contract. Later, he played for many different teams like the Victoriaville Tigres. These early years helped him become a master on the ice.

His path to the NHL was very interesting. A manager named Frank Selke wanted to sign him early. At first, Béliveau did not want to play professionally. To help him join the NHL, the owners bought a smaller league. They turned it into a professional league so he could play for the Canadiens. He finally made his full-time debut in the 1953–54 season. He stayed with the Montreal Canadiens for his entire NHL career.

He was a scoring machine on the ice.

He was the fourth player to score 500 goals. He was also the second player to reach 1,000 points. He won two Hart Memorial Trophies as the best player. He also won the Art Ross Trophy for being the top scorer. In 1965, he won the first Conn Smythe Trophy ever given. His jersey number 4 was retired by the team in 1971.

Béliveau holds a massive record for winning championships. He won 17 Stanley Cups in total. He won 10 of those while playing as a player. He won 7 more while working as a team executive. This is the most championships won by any one person. He is tied with baseball legend Frankie Crosetti for this record. Even after he stopped playing, he worked for the Canadiens for 22 years.
