He played his entire professional career for the New York Islanders. During his time in the NHL, he became famous for his ability to put the puck in the net. Bossy was a vital part of a famous group called "The Trio Grande." This group included his teammates Bryan Trottier and Clark Gillies. Together, they helped the Islanders win four Stanley Cup championships in a row. This era in the early 1980s made the team a true hockey dynasty.

Scoring goals in hockey requires great skill and timing. Bossy was a master at finding the right way to score. In his very first season in 1977, he scored 53 goals. This was a record for a rookie player at that time. He also won the Calder Memorial Trophy for being the best rookie. He was very good at playing during power plays, which is when a team has an advantage. In the 1981 playoffs, he set records for most points and most power-play goals. He was also known for his sportsmanship. He won the Lady Byng Trophy three times for playing with high quality and kindness.

Bossy grew up in a large family in Montreal, Canada. He was the fifth son in a family of ten children. His father, Borden, even kept a backyard ice rink at their apartment building. This likely helped Bossy learn to love the game early on. He played junior hockey for the Laval National in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He was incredibly successful there, scoring 309 goals. His total of 532 points is still a record for that league. Even though he was a great scorer, some scouts thought he was not rugged enough for the pros.

Many teams actually passed on the chance to draft him in 1977. Twelve different teams did not pick him during the NHL amateur draft. Some teams thought he was not tough enough to play defense. The New York Islanders eventually chose him with the 15th overall selection. He proved those scouts wrong by becoming a superstar immediately. In the 1980-81 season, he achieved a very rare feat. He became only the second player to score 50 goals in just 50 games. This happened 36 years after Maurice Richard first did it.

Bossy's many achievements have left a lasting mark on the sport. He holds the record for the most average goals scored per regular season game. He also tied the record for the most 50-goal seasons with nine. Because of his amazing career, he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. He was also named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history. His number 17 was retired by the Acadie–Bathurst Titan to honor him. People still talk about his skill and his many winning goals today.
