He played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens. Richard was a prolific scorer who changed how the game was played. He was the first player in NHL history to score 50 goals in a single season. He achieved this milestone by scoring 50 goals in only 50 games during the 1944–45 season.

Richard also became the first player to reach 500 career goals. His impact on the sport was so great that he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017.

Richard's journey to greatness began in a difficult environment. He was born on August 4, 1921, in Montreal, Quebec. He was the oldest of eight children in a family that struggled during the Great Depression. His father, Onésime, worked as a carpenter and for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

To develop his skills, Maurice skated on local rivers and a small backyard ice surface. He played informal games like "hog," where the puck carrier tries to keep the puck away from others. These early years of playing without organized structure helped build his unique style. He eventually dropped out of school at age 16 to work as a machinist.

His early professional career was defined by physical struggle and resilience. Richard suffered several serious injuries that threatened his future in hockey. He broke his ankle, wrist, and leg during his early years in the league. These injuries were so severe that they prevented him from joining the Canadian military during the Second World War. An injury to his ankle left it permanently deformed. This forced him to change his skating style to remain competitive. Despite these setbacks, he intensified his training to prove his toughness to critics.

Once healthy, Richard became a dominant force on the ice. He joined a famous forward line known as the "Punch line." This group consisted of Richard, Elmer Lach, and Toe Blake.

The trio was a highly successful scoring unit throughout the 1940s. Richard's scoring ability helped the Montreal Canadiens win eight Stanley Cup championships. This included a league record of five consecutive championships between 1956 and 1960. He served as the team captain during the final four of those championship years. In 1947, he won the Hart Trophy, which is awarded to the league's most valuable player.

One of Richard's most famous achievements occurred during the 1944–45 season. He set a new record by scoring 50 goals in just 50 games.

To reach this goal, he had to play through intense physical pressure from opponents. Players used slashes, hooks, and even draped themselves over his back to stop him. He scored his 50th goal with only 2:15 remaining in a game against the Boston Bruins. This feat was so rare that it was not matched for 36 years. It remains one of the most celebrated milestones in the history of the NHL.

Richard's influence extended far beyond the hockey rink. He became a powerful cultural icon for the francophone population of Quebec. His intense playing style and personality made him a symbol of pride. In 1955, an incident where he struck a linesman led to a suspension by NHL President Clarence Campbell. This event caused the "Richard Riot" in Montreal. Many historians view this riot as a precursor to the Quiet Revolution in Quebec. His legend is even a central theme in the famous Canadian short story, "The Hockey Sweater."

Even after his retirement in 1960, Richard's legacy continued to grow. The Montreal Canadiens retired his number 9 jersey in his honor.

Richard was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961 after the organization waived its usual waiting period. He was also honored by Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. After passing away from abdominal cancer in 2000, he was the first non-politician to receive a state funeral in Quebec.
