Joseph Hector "Toe" Blake was a monumental figure in professional ice hockey. He achieved legendary status as both a star player and a highly successful coach in the National Hockey League (NHL). His career is defined by an extraordinary ability to score goals and lead teams to victory. Because he frequently hit the light behind the net, fans gave him the nickname "The Old Lamplighter."

His impact was so profound that in 2017, he was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in history.

Blake's journey began in Northern Ontario, where he grew up playing outdoor hockey. He was born in 1912 to Wilmer and Arzélie Blake. His family lived in Coniston, near Sudbury, after moving there for work. His famous nickname, "Toe," actually originated from a childhood mistake. His younger sister struggled to pronounce his full name, calling him something like "Hec-toe." Eventually, the shortened version became his permanent name.

As a professional player, Blake displayed remarkable skill and sportsmanship. He began his NHL career with the Montreal Maroons in 1935. He later moved to the Montreal Canadiens, where he became the team captain from 1940 until his retirement as a player in 1948. In 1939, he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player. That same year, he led the league in scoring with 47 points. He was also a remarkably disciplined athlete. In 1946, he became the first Canadiens player to win the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which honors players who combine skill with sportsmanship.

One of the most famous aspects of Blake's playing career was his role in the "Punch Line." This trio consisted of Blake, Elmer Lach at center, and Maurice Richard at right wing. They were a highly skilled group that dominated the game. In one incredible season, the three linemates finished first, second, and third in total NHL scoring.

This feat was rare, following the Boston Bruins' "Kraut Line" and preceding the Detroit Red Wings' "Production Line." Blake's ability to coordinate with his teammates made the Canadiens a formidable force.

Blake's playing career ended abruptly due to a physical injury. During a game against the New York Rangers on January 11, 1948, he collided with player Bill Juzda. The collision caused him to hit the boards awkwardly, resulting in a double fracture of his ankle. Even with this injury, his statistical legacy remained impressive. At the time of his retirement, he had 527 career points. He also held the all-time record for career points in the playoffs with 62 points in 58 games.

After his playing days, Blake transitioned into coaching, where he reached even greater heights. He became the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens on June 8, 1955. He held this position for thirteen years until 1968. During his coaching tenure, he led the team to eight Stanley Cup championships. This included a historic streak where he won the championship in each of his first five seasons. This remains an NHL record to this day.

He was also the first coach to reach 500 regular-season wins with a single team.

Blake's coaching style and leadership helped define an era of dominance for Montreal. He was fluently bilingual in English and French, which helped him manage the team effectively. He famously coached the Canadiens to a perfect playoff run in 1960, winning all eight games to claim the Stanley Cup. This was the fourth time in history a team won the Cup without losing a single playoff game. By the time he retired in 1968, he had spent 33 consecutive years with the Canadiens organization. His legacy is preserved in the Hockey Hall of Fame and through various memorials in his hometown.
