His journey into boxing started at a recreation center in 1969. His older brother, Roger, helped start the boxing program there. A coach once said the young boy was "sweet as sugar." This comment helped give him his famous nickname. Leonard worked very hard as an amateur boxer for many years. In 1976, he joined the U.S. Olympic Team. He won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics in that year. He won his final match against Andrés Aldama from Cuba.

Life was not always easy for Leonard after the Olympics. He had a young son to support and his parents were sick. Because of these hard jobs, he decided to become a professional boxer. In 1977, he took a loan of $21,000 to start his career. He worked with a trainer named Angelo Dundee to help him win. His first pro fight was in Baltimore in February 1977. He defeated Luis Vega to start his successful professional path. He even paid back his early loans very quickly.

Leonard reached many big milestones during his long career. He was the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in prize money. Many magazines named him the "Boxer of the Decade" for the 1980s. In 1979, he fought Wilfred Benítez for a major world title. That fight happened at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. It was a very tough and tactical battle between two champions. Leonard won his first world title by using smart moves. He continued to win many more fights until 1997.

Today, people still remember Leonard for his amazing skills in the ring. He was voted the ninth greatest fighter of the last 80 years. In 2016, a magazine voted him the greatest living fighter. He did not just stay in the boxing world, though. Leonard also became an actor in many television shows and films. He appeared in shows like "Half & Half" and "I Spy." He showed that a great athlete can find success in many different ways.
