Couture is best known for his incredible success in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He became a six-time UFC champion throughout his career. He held three heavyweight titles and two light heavyweight titles. He also won one interim light heavyweight title. He was the first fighter in history to win championships in two different weight divisions. This achievement showed his ability to adapt to different sizes of opponents.

Couture developed a very specific and effective fighting style. He is recognized as a clinch and ground-and-pound fighter. This style relies heavily on his background in wrestling. First, he uses wrestling to execute takedowns, which brings the opponent to the floor. Once the fight is on the ground, he establishes a top position. From this position, he uses "ground-and-pound" tactics. This means he lands successive strikes on the opponent while they are on the bottom. He also uses skills from boxing and catch wrestling to manage his opponents. This combination of grappling and striking allowed him to control the pace of many fights.

His path to professional greatness began with a strong foundation in amateur wrestling. Couture was born in Everett, Washington. He attended Lynnwood High School, where he won a state wrestling championship. From 1982 to 1988, he served in the U.S. Army.

He reached the rank of sergeant in the 101st Airborne division. During his service, he practiced both wrestling and boxing. A clerical error actually led him to join the Greco-Roman wrestling team instead of the freestyle team. He excelled in Greco-Roman and won the U.S. Army Europe title. He later became a three-time NCAA Division I All-American at Oklahoma State University. He graduated from the university with a bachelor's degree in literature.

Couture's professional MMA career began with a sudden opportunity. He made his debut at UFC 13 on May 30, 1997. He was called into a four-man heavyweight tournament as an alternate with only three weeks' notice. He won the tournament by defeating Tony Halme and Steven Graham. His first major upset occurred at UFC 15 against Vitor Belfort. Belfort was a highly touted 19-year-old champion. Couture used his wrestling to tire Belfort out and won via strikes. Later, in December 1997, he defeated Maurice Smith to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion. This win was somewhat controversial because many felt Smith had done enough to win.

Couture's career is defined by his ability to win titles multiple times. He is one of the few MMA champions to regain a title he had lost. In fact, he is the only one to have done this three times. He regained the heavyweight title twice and the light heavyweight title once. He has competed in 15 different title fights. He is tied for the record of most wins in UFC Heavyweight Championship bouts with six wins. He also holds the record for the most title reigns in the UFC with six. His longevity in the sport is truly remarkable. He is one of only two fighters over the age of 40 to win a UFC championship fight.

One of the most surprising facts about Couture is his age during his successes. He is the oldest champion in the history of mixed martial arts. He won a championship at the age of 45. He is also the only UFC fighter to win a championship after already being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. He was the fourth person ever inducted into the Hall of Fame. His career involved many different weight classes and intense rivalries. He had a famous trilogy of fights against Chuck Liddell. These fights helped establish his legacy as a versatile and durable athlete.

After his primary fighting years, Couture transitioned into new professional roles. He became a regular broadcast commentator for UFC events. He also serves as an analyst for the Professional Fighters League. He has shared his expertise by coaching at Oregon State University. He also established Team Quest, a training camp in Gresham, Oregon. In 2005, he moved to Las Vegas to open his own gym chain, Xtreme Couture. He even appeared as an actor in the movie Big Stan. His life connects the worlds of military service, collegiate athletics, and professional sports entertainment.
