He is often called the greatest rider in the history of the sport. During his career, he won eleven Grand Tours. These are the biggest multi-day races in cycling. He won five Tours de France, five Giros d'Italia, and one Vuelta a España. He also won all five Monuments, which are very famous one-day races.

Merckx is the only person to win all five Monuments at least twice. These include Milan–San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris–Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and the Giro di Lombardia.

Because he was so dominant, people gave him the nickname "the Cannibal." This name was suggested by the daughter of one of his teammates. She said it because Merckx would not let anyone else win. Over his eighteen-year career, he achieved 525 total victories. He also set a famous hour record in October 1972. He rode almost 800 metres further than the previous record holder.

His journey began in Belgium, where his parents ran a grocery store.

He started with the Solo–Superia team. Later, he moved to the Peugeot–BP–Michelin team. He found it difficult at first because some teammates mocked his habits. He eventually moved to the Faema team in 1967 to have more control. This move helped him win his first Grand Tour, the Giro d'Italia. He also became a world champion that same year. He earned the right to wear the special rainbow jersey.

Even after he retired in 1978, Merckx stayed busy in the cycling world.
