He was born in Arvier, Italy, in 1871. His family moved to the Alps near the French border in 1885. Before he became a famous athlete, Garin worked as a chimney sweep. He even helped his brothers open a cycle shop in Roubaix, France, in 1895. Garin officially became a French citizen on December 21, 1901. He lived in Lens, France, for the rest of his life.

Garin was known for his incredible endurance during long races. In 1893, he won a 24-hour race in Paris. He rode 701 km in just one day! To keep his energy up, he ate a unique diet. He consumed 19 liters of hot chocolate and 7 liters of tea. He also ate 45 cutlets, 8 hardboiled eggs, and 2 kg of rice.

This race was created to help a new newspaper called L'Auto. The race went around France and lasted 19 days. Garin finished the course in 94 hours and 33 minutes. He won 3,000 francs for his first-place finish. This was a huge amount of money at that time. He was a true hero to the many people watching.

However, the history of his racing had some difficult moments. In 1904, Garin won the Tour de France again. But he was later stripped of his title. The organizers found that many riders had broken the rules. Some riders used cars to help them move faster. During that race, some fans were also very unkind to the riders. Garin was even hit by a stone during the event.
