He was a famous sports journalist and the director of the Tour de France. This huge bicycle race is one of the most famous in the world. Goddet helped make the race a massive success for many years. He was born in Paris in 1905 and lived there until he died in 2000. People in France remember him as a man who helped invent much of their modern sports culture.

Goddet worked very hard to organize and lead big sporting events. He took over the leadership of the Tour de France in 1936. He stayed in charge of the race for fifty years until 1986. He also had big ideas for the sport of soccer. He helped create the idea for the Intercontinental Cup. Later, he suggested making a Club World Cup with teams from Asia, Africa, and North America. He wanted to bring many different parts of the world together through sports.

His journey into sports began with his family and a newspaper. His father, Victor Goddet, helped start a newspaper called L'Auto. This paper was the one that organized the very first Tour de France in 1903. Jacques started working for his father's paper in 1924. He loved watching the riders compete in the big races. He once watched them struggle for over 16 hours on muddy and stony paths. He followed almost every Tour de France until 1989.

During the Second World War, Goddet's life and work were very difficult. Germany occupied France, and the Tour de France had to stop for a while. Goddet supported a French leader named Philippe Pétain during this time. He also gave the keys to a building called the Vélodrome d'Hiver to the Germans. This building was used to hold many Jewish people. These actions were very serious and complicated. After the war ended, he helped start a new sports newspaper called L'Équipe in 1946.

Goddet's legacy lives on through the sports he loved so much. When he died at age 95, leaders in France spoke about his great work. The President of France, Jacques Chirac, called him an inventor of French sport. The Prime Minister, Lionel Jospin, said he made the Tour de France famous across the whole world. Even former bike racers remembered him as a man with strong values. His name is still linked to the great history of cycling and journalism.
