He spent many years working for the newspaper L'Auto. His father helped start that paper. Jacques loved watching bike races. He saw riders struggle on muddy and stony paths.

Goddet led the Tour de France for fifty years. He took over the race in 1936. He ran the big race until 1986. He also had big ideas for soccer. He wanted a world cup for club teams. This would include teams from Asia and Africa.

During a hard time in France, Goddet had a complex role. He worked for the newspaper while Germany held power in France. He supported a leader named Pétain. He also gave keys to a building used to hold Jewish people. This part of his life was very difficult.

After the war, he started a new paper called L'Équipe. He wrote for it without using his own name at first. He lived to be 95 years old. Leaders in France called him an inventor of French sport. They said he made the Tour de France famous all over the world.
