He wanted to turn cave study into a real science. Martel spent his life looking at the world beneath our feet. He explored thousands of caves in France and many other countries. His work helped people understand the wonders of the underworld.

Martel used many different ways to explore deep places. In 1889, he visited Padirac Cave near Gramat. He climbed down a large opening in the ground. He reached a river at a depth of 100 meters.

He even used a canoe to find two kilometers of new paths. In 1912, he went to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. There, he used tools to measure the height of different cave levels. These steps helped him map the earth carefully.

Martel was born in Pontoise on July 1, 1859. He grew up in a family of lawyers. He studied at the Lycée Condorcet in Paris. Even as a young man, he loved geography. In 1877, he won a first prize in a geography competition.
