Coppi's journey to greatness began with a deep passion for his bicycle. As a young boy, he often skipped school to ride a rusty old bike. He eventually worked at a butcher shop in Novi Ligure to earn money. His uncle, a merchant navy officer, gave him 600 lire to buy a real racing frame.

Coppi traveled to Genoa to have a frame built to his measurements. He even used his small salary to buy his own tires and parts. This hard work helped make his legs very strong for racing.

His professional career reached incredible heights during the 1940s and 1950s. Coppi won the Giro d'Italia five times in 1940, 1947, 1949, 1952, and 1953. He also won the Tour de France twice in 1949 and 1952. In 1949, he became the first person to win both of these major races in the same year.

He was also the 1953 world road champion. Coppi won many other famous races like Milan–San Remo and the Giro di Lombardia. He even set a world hour record in 1942 by riding 45.798 km.

Racing in Italy often felt like a competition between two different worlds. Coppi had a famous rivalry with another great rider named Gino Bartali. This rivalry divided the Italian people into two groups of fans. The fans of Bartali were called "bartaliani," while the fans of Coppi were "coppiani."

Later in life, Coppi faced many difficult and sad times. He dealt with the death of his younger brother, Serse Coppi, in 1951. He also faced a public scandal in 1955 that hurt his reputation in Italy.
