Drone racing is a high-speed motorsport for people who love flying.

Pilots use radio-controlled aircraft called quadcopter drones to race. Most of these drones are very small and built for speed. Unlike photography drones, racing drones focus on being quick and agile. They use an H-pattern for their motors to push the drone forward. They also use propellers with three or four blades. This design helps them turn and move with great speed. Pilots need very steady hands and fast reactions to win.

To fly well, pilots use something called First-Person View, or FPV.

A small camera sits on the nose of the drone. This camera sends a live video feed to the pilot. Most pilots wear head-mounted goggles to see this view. It feels like the pilot is actually sitting inside the drone. These goggles can cost anywhere from $40 to $800. Some expensive goggles even have digital HD video or head tracking. The video is sent through the air using radio frequencies. This allows the pilot to navigate through tricky obstacles instantly.

This exciting sport began in 2011 in Germany.

A group of amateur controllers met in Karlsruhe to start racing. Since then, many different groups have helped the sport grow. One group is called MultiGP, which organizes many local chapters. Another group is the Drone Racing League, or DRL. The DRL is an invite-only league for professional pilots. They even build their own special drones called the Racer 4. This ensures that every pilot is using the same equipment.

Racing courses can be found in many different places.

Some tracks are built in big cities or near castles. For example, the 2017 DHL Champions Series raced at Bunowen Castle in Ireland. Other races happen in wide-open spaces like the Mojave Boneyard. Some courses use man-made gates, while others use natural landmarks. The DRL makes three-dimensional tracks that can be a mile long. These tracks often look like they belong in a science fiction movie. Pilots must fly through these gates as fast as possible.

Drone racing has become a huge global event with big prizes. In 2016, the World Drone Prix in Dubai had a prize fund of $1 million. Many famous organizations help run these big competitions. The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, or FAI, is the world governing body. They coordinate the FAI Drone Racing World Cup. Many different countries send their best pilots to compete. For instance, Minchan Kim from South Korea won the MultiGP Championship twice. This shows how much people around the world love this sport.
