They can travel on trails, forest roads, and sand. People use them for fun or for work. They help on farms and at building sites.

Early vehicles used new ways to move. Adolphe Kégresse made a system for cars. It used a flexible belt called a caterpillar track.

This helped cars drive on soft ground. Later, Jeeps became popular after World War II. Many people started using them as a hobby.

To drive well, these vehicles need special parts. They need high ground clearance. This means the bottom of the car stays high. This keeps it from hitting rocks. They also need good tires. Some tires are for all terrain. Others are made just for mud.

Some vehicles use tracks instead of wheels. Tracks are wide and help the vehicle stay on top of soft ground. These can be expensive to fix. However, they work very well in rough places. Most vehicles also use low gearings. This gives the engine more power for slow moves.
