Snowboard cross

sports Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Snowboard cross is a fast and exciting race on snow.

In this sport, four to six riders race down a course at once. The paths are often very narrow. They include many different types of obstacles. You might see jumps, steep drops, and rollers. There are also berms, which are banked turns. Riders must stay in control while moving at maximum speed. Because they race side-by-side, accidents can happen during the race.

To stay safe, riders use specific gear. Each person uses a snowboard. These boards should be stiff and fairly heavy. Helmets are a must for racing in FIS events. Some riders also use a mouth guard to protect their teeth. It is very important to wear tight clothing. This stops riders from getting tangled with each other. Some people even wear body armor. This includes protectors for the back and spine.

The sport began with a clever idea for a TV show. Steven Rechtschaffner and Greg Stump were making a show called Greg Stump's World of Extremes. Rechtschaffner had an idea for a race in his head. He pitched the idea to Stump for the show. In 1991, Blackcomb Mountain helped build the first course. They provided prize money and a snowcat to help. A man named John Graham gave it the name boardercross.

Boardercross grew quickly after appearing on Fox TV and MTV Sports. People started holding events in Australia, Canada, and the U.S. Rechtschaffner trademarked the name to keep the sport safe and respectful. He did not want the F.I.S. to use the name boardercross. This is why the Olympics call it snowboard cross instead. The sport became an official Olympic event in 2006 in Turin. It has also been part of the X Games since 1997.

You might recognize this sport from things you play. In 2000, Rechtschaffner made the SSX video game series. These games were based on the spirit of boardercross. They sold over 8 million copies in a few years. Another game called Sonic Riders was also inspired by it. In that game, characters race on hoverboards. Snowboard cross is a way to see real skill and speed. It brings people together through fast and fun racing.
