It includes several events in the Winter Olympics. People call it freeskiing, jibbing, or even hot-dogging. Some skiers perform flips and spins in the air. Others slide across rails and boxes on their skis. This sport is all about skill and creativity on the snow.

One major event is called aerials.

Aerialists ski off jumps that are 2 to 4 meters high. This can launch them 6 meters into the air. They perform many flips and twists before they land. They land on a hill that is 30 meters long. To stay safe, they practice on water ramps in the summer. They ski down a wooden ramp and land in a large pool.

Another event is mogul skiing.

Moguls are bumps made of snow on a trail. Skiers make these bumps by making short turns. Athletes must ski through these bumps in a calm and fast way. They are judged on their speed and their technique. Since the mid-1990s, skiers can even do flips during their jumps. Canadian athlete Alexandre Bilodeau has won two gold medals in this event.

Freestyle skiing has a long and interesting history. People have shown ski acrobatics since 1906. Jackson Fitzgerald made aerial skiing popular in 1908 in Minnesota. In 1969, Waterville Valley in New Hampshire started the first instruction program. This place is known as the birthplace of freestyle skiing. Legends like Wayne Wong and Floyd Wilkie helped lead the way.

The International Ski Federation began making rules for the sport in 1979.

There are many other ways to enjoy freestyle skiing. Slopestyle skiers use twin-tip skis to help them land backwards. They ski down courses with jumps and rails. Halfpipe skiers ride in a U-shaped path to do tricks.

This event joined the Olympics in 2014 in Sochi, Russia. There was also an event called acroski, which was like ski ballet. It used music and lasted for 3 to 5 minutes. These different styles show how much variety there is in the sport.
