People do this for recreation or as a serious sport. Most skiers visit ski resorts for their trips. These places offer many helpful services for visitors. They have ski lifts to carry people up the mountains. They also have snow grooming and artificial snow making. Many resorts have restaurants and ski patrols to keep everyone safe.

Some people prefer to ski "off-piste" outside the marked areas. They might use helicopters or snowmobiles to reach the top. Back-country skiers use special equipment to climb up steep slopes. They use "sticky" skins on their skis to stop them from sliding backward while they walk up.

Learning how to move on snow is a big part of the skill.

Beginners often start with a snowplough turn to stay in control. This is the simplest way to turn and slow down. As skiers get better, they learn more complex ways to move. They might use a "stem" turn by angling the back of the ski. Advanced skiers use "carving" to make smooth, flowing turns. This works because the shape of the ski helps it bend into an arc. Some experts use a technique called "checking" to control their speed. They do this by putting pressure on the edges of their skis. This helps them go straight down bumpy hills without going too fast.

Skiing has been around for a very long time.

Ancient wooden planks were found in peat bogs in places like Russia and Norway. These early tools helped people cross frozen wetlands and marshes. The word "ski" comes from an Old Norse word meaning a split piece of wood. In the 1760s, the Norwegian army even used skiing for military training. Modern alpine skiing really began to take shape in the 1850s. A famous Norwegian named Sondre Norheim helped change the sport. He created skis with curved sides and stiff bindings made of willow. He also showed people how to perform new types of turns.

There are many different kinds of gear used today.

Skis come in many shapes for different jobs. Powder skis are wide so they can float on top of soft snow. Freestyle skis are made for people who want to jump in terrain parks. Race skis are short, narrow, and very stiff to help people go fast. Bindings connect your boots to the skis and can release during a fall. This helps prevent injuries if a skier trips. Boots have changed from leather with laces to plastic with buckles. Modern boots have a soft inner liner to keep feet warm and comfortable.

Safety is a very important part of the sport.

Skiers wear helmets to protect their heads and stay warm. They might also use mouth guards to protect their teeth. Some racers wear extra padding like shin guards or arm guards. This protects them if they hit a gate during a race. Alpine ski racing has been a part of the Winter Olympics since 1936. Today, millions of people enjoy skiing all over the world. As of 2023, about 55 million people engaged in alpine skiing. Many of these skiers live in Europe, North America, and Japan.
