Some people ski in the back-country. They use special tools to climb up hills. These tools include skins on the bottom of the skis. These skins stop the skis from sliding backward.

Skiing has a long history. Long ago, people used wooden planks to cross frozen marshes. The word ski comes from an old word for wood. In the 1850s, modern alpine skiing began. A man named Sondre Norheim helped start new trends. He made skis with curved sides. He also showed people how to make new turns.
