A unicycle is a special vehicle that touches the ground with only one wheel.

While bicycles use two wheels for balance, a unicycle relies entirely on the rider. Most common models have a frame, a seat, and two pedals. People use them for many things today. You might see them in a circus or at a street festival. Some people even use them to play sports like basketball or hockey.

Most unicycles work through a system called direct-drive. This means the pedals are attached to the wheel hub.

When the rider pushes the pedals, the wheel turns immediately. The wheel is made of a tire, a tube, a rim, and spokes. A seatpost holds the saddle, which is the part the rider sits on. The seatpost can slide to change the height. This setup makes the rider the main part of the machine's balance.

People have been riding single wheels for a long time. In 1869, Frederick Myers published a patent for a single-wheeled vehicle. Later, in 1881, Battista Scuri also published a patent.

Unicycle designs have changed a lot since the early days. They grew from the old penny-farthing bicycle style. Now, we have many different shapes and sizes for different jobs.

There are many different types of unicycles for different paths. Mountain unicycles, or "MUnis," have thick tires for riding on dirt trails.

Trials unicycles are extra strong to handle jumping and dropping.

Some unicycles are very tall and use a chain, called giraffe unicycles.

Touring unicycles use large wheels to travel long distances more easily. Some even use a two-speed hub to help with speed.

Unicycling is a lot like other ways of moving on wheels. It shares parts like pedals, cranks, and saddles with bicycles. However, unicycles usually do not have brakes or gears.

This makes them feel very different to ride. Because they lack a frame with two wheels, they can be hard to keep steady. But a skilled rider can be very stable. They can even perform amazing tricks on flat ground or in the streets.
