It began in the Bronx, New York City. Many Black and Latino youth helped start it.

Some people say it began at a party in 1973. DJ Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell hosted this event. Cindy is often called the Mother of Hip Hop.

There are four main parts to this culture. First is DJing, where people play records. Kool Herc used two players to loop drum beats. This is called a breakbeat. Second is emceeing, or rapping. This is speaking words in a rhythmic way. It can include rhymes and jokes. Third is breaking, which is a type of dance.

Dancers are often called b-boys or b-girls. The fourth part is graffiti, which is art made with spray paint.

Artists also use sampling. This means they take parts of old songs to make new music. They call this "flipping." Hip hop has spread from city streets to the whole world. It is now a way for people to share their stories.
