At parties, DJs and MCs made announcements over microphones. These announcements grew into complex songs. Rap has many roots. It draws from West African griots who told stories with drums. It also comes from jazz, blues, and gospel music. Some people call it "the living blues."

Rap has three main parts. The first is content, which is the lyrics. The second is flow, which is the rhythm and rhyme. The third is delivery, which is the tone of the voice. A rapper can perform with a DJ or a beatboxer. Sometimes, they perform a cappella. This means they use no music at all. Today, rap is a global way to talk about big issues. It helps people speak about racism and poverty.
