Hip-hop dance is a diverse collection of street dance styles.

It is performed to hip-hop music or evolved as part of hip-hop culture. This dance is unique because it is often freestyle, which means it is improvisational. Dancers frequently participate in competitions known as battles. These battles allow individuals or crews to showcase their skill. Hip-hop dance serves many purposes today. It can be a hobby or a form of entertainment. It is also a professional career for many dancers.

Breaking is considered the first hip-hop dance style. It was created in the South Bronx, New York, during the early 1970s. Breaking includes four foundational elements. First is toprock, which consists of footwork-oriented steps performed while standing. Second is downrock, where dancers use both hands and feet on the floor. Third are freezes, which are stylish poses held on the hands. Finally, power moves are complex, impressive acrobatic movements. Dancers move from toprock to downrock using a transition called a drop.

The evolution of breaking was driven by musical and cultural changes. In 1973, DJ Kool Herc popularized the break beat. A break beat is a rhythmic, musical interlude of a song. Herc used two turntables, a mixer, and two identical records to loop these breaks. This technique is known as beat juggling. By extending the instrumental solo, he provided more time for dancers to perform. He also coined the terms b-boy and b-girl. These stand for break-boy and break-girl, referring to those who dance to the break.

Cultural groups played vital roles in the development of these styles. African Americans created breaking in New York. Later, Puerto Rican dancers helped maintain its growth during the late 1970s. Richard "Crazy Legs" Colón noted that Puerto Ricans added more acrobatic moves. This helped the dance evolve and stay alive. While breaking grew in New York, other styles emerged in California. These are known as funk styles. They were created independently of breaking and were originally danced to funk music.

California's funk styles include several distinct movements. Locking, originally called Campbelllocking, was created in 1969 by Don "Campbellock" Campbell. His crew, The Lockers, helped popularize the style. Other popular funk styles include popping. Other West Coast styles include boogaloo, which began as a 1960s fad dance. Media coverage often grouped these West Coast styles with New York styles. The term "breakdance" became a catch-all label for many different forms. This caused confusion regarding the specific origins of popping and locking.

Social dancing, or party dancing, developed as breaking and funk styles gained popularity. In the 1980s, novelty dances like the Roger Rabbit and the Cabbage Patch appeared. The Cabbage Patch was based on a song by the rap group Gucci Crew II. In the 1990s, dances like the Running Man became common. The 2000s saw the rise of the Cha Cha Slide and the Dougie. These social dances change constantly. They evolve alongside new music releases. This keeps the culture dynamic and fresh for new generations.

Today, hip-hop dance exists in many different environments. It is practiced in outdoor spaces and professional dance studios. Classically trained dancers created "new style" or jazz-funk for commercial use. This is a hip-hop influenced version of jazz dance. The dance has also reached the global stage through movies and the Internet. Television shows like Soul Train and films like Wild Style provided early exposure. Now, large corporate competitions like World of Dance exist worldwide. Hip-hop remains a powerful way to stay active and share creativity.
