This land was located in parts of modern Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and Turkey. It was the first huge political group to form in the eastern Balkans. The kingdom grew from many different tribes joined together. The Odrysians were the main group in charge of this large area. They lived in a region that was so big some people thought it was a continent.

This kingdom was very important for the history of the region.

This state grew because of changes in the lands around it. Long ago, the Persian Empire had a presence in Europe. The Persians tried to invade Greece between 480 and 479 BC. When the Persian invasion failed, their power in Europe collapsed. This left a gap that the Thracian tribes could fill. The Odrysians used this time to build their own large state. They moved into the valleys of the Hebros river and its many branches. They became much more organized than the smaller tribes before them.

King Teres I was the first great leader of the Odrysians.

He founded the kingdom and made it very strong. His son, Sitalces, also helped the kingdom expand its borders. Together, they grew the land from the Danube river in the north to the Aegean Sea in the south. They even made friends with the Scythian kingdom through marriage. Sitalces was a very skilled leader who made the kingdom very wealthy. He even made a famous alliance with the city of Athens.

Wealthy Odrysian leaders lived very grand lives.

Many of these burials were for warriors and contained weapons. The Thracians were also known for being excellent at riding horses. In fact, people in Athens admired them so much they copied Thracian clothes. They even wore Thracian boots and fox-skin caps.

Over time, the great kingdom began to change and break apart. By 400 BC, the state showed signs of getting tired. The kingdom of Macedon, led by Philip II, eventually conquered the Odrysian lands in 340 BC. Later, a leader named Seuthes III tried to bring the kingdom back.

This city functioned for a long time before the kingdom faded away. Eventually, the Roman Republic arrived and took control of the area. The heartlands of the Odrysians became part of the Roman province of Thracia.
