It served as the capital for the kingdom of Macedon for a long time. This city was located in a place called Central Macedonia. It was likely started in the early 4th century BC. A leader named Archelaus I probably founded it to be a new capital. He wanted a place for trade and business. The name Pella might even come from an old word for stone.

The city was built using a very smart plan.

This is called a grid plan. It means the streets cross each other at right angles. Most streets were about 9 or 10 meters wide. One main street was even wider at 15 meters. These streets formed eight rows of rectangular blocks. The city also had a large public square called an agora.

Archaeologists have found many things there since 1953. They found 1,000 tombs since the year 2000. One farmer even found a huge tomb in 2006. Today, the site is a place to learn about the past.
