He lived during a time of great change after the death of Alexander the Great. As a young man, Cassander received a very good education. He studied with the famous philosopher Aristotle at the Lyceum. He even learned alongside Alexander the Great in a group of students. This group included other famous leaders like Ptolemy and Lysimachus. These men would later become important rulers themselves.

After Alexander died in 323 BC, a period of fighting began. Many leaders fought to control the large empire Alexander had built. These leaders were known as the Diadochi. Cassander was one of these men. He worked to gain power in Macedonia and southern Greece. He was often seen as a very harsh leader. He took many difficult steps to remove his political enemies. This included causing the deaths of Alexander’s son and his wife, Roxana. He also dealt with other members of the royal family to secure his own rule.

Cassander became the king of Macedonia in 305 BC.

He spent much of his time making his lands stronger. He focused on building up the economy and helping trade grow. He was also a great builder of cities. He founded the city of Cassandreia on the ruins of Potidaea. He also founded the city of Antipatreia in the Aspros Valley. One of his most famous acts was refounding the city of Therma. He renamed it Thessalonica to honor his wife, Thessalonike.

His reign involved many large wars against other powerful leaders. He fought a long struggle against the city of Athens. He also fought against a rival named Antigonus. In 301 BC, a massive battle took place at Ipsus.

Many different armies met there to decide who would rule. After the Battle of Ipsus, Cassander was the undisputed ruler of Macedonia. He held this power until he died of dropsy in 297 BC. His death marked the end of a very busy era.

Even today, historians study how Cassander ruled. Some say he was very ambitious and acted without mercy. Others believe these stories were spread by his many enemies. We can see his influence through the coins he made.
