She was born around 375 BC in a place called Epirus. Her father was King Neoptolemus I of the Molossians. This was a group of people in the Epirus region. Her family was very famous and respected. They belonged to the Aeacidae family. This family claimed they were related to the hero Achilles. Being part of such a family gave her a strong position from the start.\n\nOlympias had many different names during her life. She was likely named Polyxena when she was young. Later, she used the name Myrtale before she married a king. She eventually became known as Olympias. This name might have been a gift for a victory in the Olympic Games. She also had a name called Stratonice after she won a battle.

Some stories say she was part of a special group that worshipped snakes. These stories come from a writer named Plutarch. She was a very important person in her own right.\n\nHer life changed when she married King Philip II of Macedonia in 357 BC. This marriage was meant to make an alliance between two lands. They had a son named Alexander. He grew up to be the famous Alexander the Great.

Olympias was a very influential mother to him. She even helped lead Macedonia while he was away on his travels. They also had a daughter named Cleopatra. Life in the royal palace was often very difficult and full of tension. Philip married another woman named Eurydice later on, which caused much trouble for Olympias.\n\nAfter Alexander the Great died in 323 BC, a big fight for power began. Many people wanted to rule his huge empire. Olympias wanted to protect her grandson, Alexander IV. She fought hard to make sure he would be the next leader.

She even won a battle against a woman named Adea Eurydice. This victory helped keep Alexander IV in line for the throne. She was a leader who did not give up easily during these hard times.\n\nHowever, the fighting between leaders did not stop. A man named Cassander took control of the land. He was a leader who wanted to rule without her family. Olympias was eventually defeated by Cassander
