He was born in a place called Cardia. His father, Hieronymus, was a well-known citizen. Eumenes was not just a soldier, but also a very smart writer. He served as a royal secretary for two great kings. First, he worked for Philip II of Macedon. Later, he served Alexander the Great.

This job meant he handled all the important letters for the kings. He also led groups of soldiers on horses. Because he was so good at his job, he held a lot of power.

Eumenes had a very busy life working for the kings. He was a companion and a cavalry captain. This meant he led soldiers on horseback during battles.

He even helped manage the daily affairs of the whole empire. After Alexander won a big battle at Gaugamela in 331 BC, Eumenes went on special missions. He traveled to far places, perhaps even into India. He also helped organize big royal weddings. One of these weddings was in Susa in 324 BC. There, he married a woman named Artonis. She was the daughter of a Persian leader named Artabazus II.

When Alexander the Great died in 323 BC, things changed quickly. The empire did not have a clear new king. This led to many arguments among the leaders. Eumenes stayed in the city of Babylon to help make peace. He wanted to support the family of Alexander.

Eumenes did not have as many foot soldiers as his enemy. However, he had very fast horse riders. He used his cavalry to win a huge victory. During the fighting, he even fought a man named Neoptolemus. Eumenes won that fight too. This victory was a very big deal in the history of the wars.

Even though he was successful, Eumenes faced many hard times. He fought against a powerful leader named Antigonus.

Eventually, his own soldiers, called the Silver Shields, turned against him. They betrayed him and gave him to Antigonus. Antigonus executed him during the winter of 316 to 315 BC. Many years later, a writer named Plutarch wrote a biography about him. Plutarch wanted people to remember his life and his choices.
