His father, Cleinias, was a leader in the city of Sicyon. In 264 BC, a man named Abantidas killed Cleinias to take control. This was a coup, which is when someone takes power by force. Aratus was only seven years old at the time. His aunt helped him hide until nightfall. Then, she smuggled him away to the city of Argos. He lived in Argos for many years and became a great athlete.

He led a group of people who had also been sent away from their homes. They had a clever plan to enter the city. They used ladders to climb over the high defensive walls at night. To keep the plan a secret, Aratus pretended to have a big feast. This tricked the spies who were watching him. The group climbed the walls while it was still dark. They captured the guards and took control of the city.

Aratus became a very successful general for the Achaean League.

One of his biggest wins was taking the Acrocorinth. This was a huge fortress built on a very high hill. It was thought to be impossible to capture. Aratus learned about a secret path that was not as steep. In 243 BC, he led a small group of 400 men to climb the walls. Some of his soldiers even went barefoot so they would not make noise. They succeeded and took the citadel. This victory helped the League grow much larger.
