He lived from 253 BC to 183 BC. He was born in a place called Megalopolis. His father, Craugis, died when Philopoemen was very young. A man named Cleander adopted him and helped him grow up. Philopoemen studied with wise teachers named Ecdemus and Demophanes. These teachers taught him about freedom and democracy. Because of this, Philopoemen believed a leader must be a good person. He chose to wear very simple clothes to show he was humble.

Philopoemen became a hero through many brave actions in battle. In 223 BC, he helped defend Megalopolis from a Spartan king. He lost his horse and was wounded, but he stayed to fight. Later, at the Battle of Sellasia in 224 BC, he led soldiers on horses. Even when his horse fell and he was hurt by a javelin, he kept fighting. This helped the Spartan army flee from the battle. After this, he spent ten years in Crete as a leader of soldiers. He returned to Greece in 210 BC to lead the cavalry for the Achaean League. During a fight near the Larissa river, he used a lance to defeat a leader named Damophantus. This victory made his name famous across all of Greece.

As a top leader, Philopoemen changed how the Achaean League fought. In 209 BC, he was appointed as a strategist, which is a high leader. He worked hard to make the army much larger and stronger. He gave his soldiers better equipment and new ways to move in battle. These changes helped him win the Battle of Mantinea in 207 BC. In this fight, he defeated the Spartan leader Machanidas. The Achaeans were so proud that they built a bronze statue at Delphi. This statue showed the moment Philopoemen fought Machanidas. His victories helped the Achaean League become the most important power in the region.

Philopoemen also had to deal with a leader named Nabis from Sparta. Nabis was a difficult ruler who tried to take more land. Philopoemen fought many battles to stop him and protect his people. In 201 BC, Nabis captured the city of Messene. However, Philopoemen led his army to stop the Spartans and drive them away. Later, Philopoemen went back to Crete to help the city of Gortyna. He fought using new ways of fighting called guerrilla warfare. Even when Nabis tried to take more cities, Philopoemen worked to keep the Achaean League strong. He was a leader who never stopped working to protect his home.

In his final years, Philopoemen faced hard problems with Rome and Sparta. He wanted the Achaean League to be independent and free. He did not want the Roman Senate to tell his people what to do. In 188 BC, he entered northern Laconia and changed the laws in Sparta. He removed the old walls and brought back people who had been sent away. This made many people angry with him. In 183 BC, he was captured during a fight in Messene.
