Eumenes was a prominent Greek general and administrator during the era following Alexander the Great.

He was a native of Cardia, located in the Thracian Chersonese. His father, Hieronymus, was a well-known citizen of that city. Eumenes began his career as a royal secretary, known as a grammateus. This role involved managing all official written communications for the Macedonian kings. He served under both Philip II and his son, Alexander the Great. Although some Macedonians looked down on secretaries, Eumenes held immense authority. He was a close companion to the royalty and even impressed Alexander's mother, Olympias.

During Alexander's reign, Eumenes transitioned from a scribe to a military leader. He served as a hetairos, which means a companion and a cavalry captain. This role, or hipparch, involved leading elite troops on horseback. After the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC, he performed various diplomatic missions. He was deeply involved in the daily administration of the vast empire. In 324 BC, he participated in the Marriages at Susa. During this event, he married Artonis, the daughter of the Persian satrap Artabazus II. This marriage was a significant political honor. Eumenes also recorded the activities of Alexander in a chronicle called the Ephemerides.

When Alexander died in 323 BC without a clear heir, the empire faced instability.

Eumenes remained in Babylon to help manage the transition of power. He worked to ensure the Argead royal house remained in control. During the Partition of Babylon, the empire was divided among various leaders. Eumenes was assigned the satrapies of Cappadocia and Paphlagonia. A satrapy is a province ruled by a governor called a satrap. However, these lands were not yet fully under his control. He had to fight to subdue local tribes and existing rulers. Perdiccas, the regent of the empire, provided 5,000 talents of gold to assist him.

Eumenes proved to be a highly effective and shrewd administrator. He successfully reorganized his territories to ensure they were peaceful and loyal. In Cappadocia, he raised 6,300 cavalry to manage unruly soldiers. He also used monetary concessions to win the support of the local people. His military success in Armenia helped build his reputation among the troops. This reputation allowed him to influence political decisions in the high court. For example, he championed the marriage proposal of Cleopatra of Macedon. His advice carried great weight because he had proven his competence in the field.

Conflict arose when different leaders began fighting for control of the empire. This period is known as the Wars of the Diadochi. Eumenes supported the regent Perdiccas against rivals like Antigonus and Antipater. In 321 BC, he faced the famous general Craterus at the Battle of the Hellespont.

Eumenes had fewer infantry soldiers than Craterus, but he had superior cavalry. He used clever tactics to hide the identity of Craterus from his own men. This prevented his soldiers from deserting to the more popular general. Eumenes won a stunning victory by using his horsemen to overrun the enemy flanks. He also defeated Neoptolemus in single combat during this campaign.

Despite his victories, Eumenes faced constant political and military pressure. He fought several major battles against Antigonus, including the Battle of Paraitakene. He also fought the indecisive Battle of Gabiene. His position was always difficult because he was a foreigner in a Macedonian-dominated system. His soldiers, a group known as the Silver Shields, eventually turned against him. They betrayed him and handed him over to his enemy, Antigonus. Antigonus executed Eumenes during the winter of 316 to 315 BC. His life was a cycle of brilliant military successes and tragic political betrayals.

Eumenes' life remains a significant subject for historians. The Greek biographer Plutarch included him in his famous work, Parallel Lives. Plutarch paired Eumenes with Quintus Sertorius, a rebel Roman general. This comparison highlights Eumenes' role as a leader fighting for a specific cause. His career shows how administrative skill and military talent could merge in the ancient world. He moved from being a secretary to a powerful satrap and general. His story illustrates the complexity of managing a massive, diverse empire after its founder's death.
