He lived a long life during a very busy time in history. He served two famous kings of Macedon. First, he was a top leader for King Philip II. Later, he became the second-in-command for King Alexander the Great. Because he was so experienced, many people trusted his leadership. His family also became very important in the Macedonian army. His son Philotas led the famous Companion cavalry. This was a group of 1,800 skilled horsemen.

During his time with King Philip II, Parmenion won many victories. In 356 BC, he defeated the Illyrians in a big battle. Ten years later, he took control of the town of Halos. He also helped make peace with the city of Athens in 346 BC. In 336 BC, Philip sent Parmenion to Anatolia with 10,000 men. Their goal was to help Greeks living under Persian rule. At first, the plan worked well for the Macedonians. But things changed when King Philip was murdered. The army lost hope and was defeated near Magnesia by the Persians.

When Alexander became king, Parmenion helped keep the peace. An officer named Attalus tried to stop Alexander from taking the throne. Even though Attalus was Parmenion's relative, Parmenion ordered him to be put to death. This helped Alexander become king without a struggle. Alexander was very grateful to Parmenion for this help. In 334 BC, the two leaders began a huge campaign against Persia. They had very different ways of fighting in battle. Alexander liked to take fast risks to win. Parmenion preferred a more careful and traditional way of leading.

At the Battle of Granicus, Parmenion gave Alexander advice. He suggested waiting to attack because the men were tired. Some stories say Alexander ignored him, while others say he listened. Later, at the Battle of Issus in 333 BC, Parmenion was very important. He helped stop a large Persian attack from succeeding. This allowed Alexander to launch a winning counter-attack. Parmenion also helped capture many places like Dascylium and Tarsus. His brother, Asander, even went to govern the land of Lydia.

Sadly, Parmenion's life ended in a very difficult way. Alexander heard that Parmenion's son, Philotas, was part of a plot. The army put Philotas to death for this. Alexander feared that Parmenion might be involved too. There was no proof that Parmenion had done anything wrong. However, Alexander sent two officers on racing camels to find him. These men arrived and killed Parmenion in 330 BC. This was a sudden end for a man who had served two kings. His brother Asander later became a prominent person in the empire again.
