Attalus was a man from Lower Macedonia. He lived a very long time ago. He was born around 390 BC. Attalus served in the court of King Philip II. He was also a soldier for the king.

This man was a person of high rank. He held a position of power in the kingdom. His life was tied to the royal family. He was close to the leaders of his land.

Many things happened because of his family ties. In 338 BC, a woman married King Philip II. Her name was Cleopatra Eurydice. She was the adopted niece of Attalus. At the wedding, Attalus made a special prayer. He prayed for a male heir for the king. This prayer was seen as an insult to Alexander the Great. Alexander was the son of King Philip.

In the spring of 336 BC, Attalus received a new job. King Philip II gave him a leadership role. Attalus and a man named Parmenion led an army. They were an advance force for a big invasion. Their goal was to enter the Persian Empire. This area was known as Asia Minor. They were far away from the home of Macedonia.

Life changed quickly when King Philip died. A man named Pausanias of Orestis killed the king. Alexander the Great then became the new king. Attalus was still away with his army in Asia Minor. Some stories say a man from Athens sent a letter. The man was named Demosthenes. He promised support to Attalus if he fought Alexander. Attalus gave this letter to Alexander to show loyalty.

Even with his loyalty, Attalus faced great danger. Alexander was angry with him. Alexander's family members had been killed. Some say Alexander thought Attalus was too popular. He may have thought Attalus was too ambitious. Alexander sent an officer to find him. Attalus was executed in 336 BC. His life ended during a time of great change.
