He lived from about 400 BC until 319 BC. He was a general and a statesman, which means he helped run the government. Antipater belonged to a noble family called the house of Iolaos. His family may have been related to the kings of Macedon. He was born in a city called Paliura. He grew up to be a man who helped shape the history of many lands.

Antipater worked for two very famous kings. First, he was a close advisor to King Philip II. He helped Philip expand the Macedonian state. Later, he helped Alexander the Great take the throne in 336 BC. When Alexander went away to fight wars in Asia, Antipater stayed home. He became the regent, which is a leader who rules while the king is away. He held this power for many years. He had to manage many different tasks to keep the lands safe.

Keeping order was a very hard job for Antipater. He had to stop many groups from rebelling. In 330 BC, he led an army against the Spartans. They fought a big battle at Megalopolis.

Antipater won this fight against King Agis III. Later, he fought the Lamian War against groups in Greece. He was even trapped inside the city of Lamia for a while. He escaped with help from a man named Leonnatus. Eventually, he won the Battle of Crannon with help from Craterus.

Antipater had a very large family with many children. He had eleven children, including four daughters and seven sons. His son Cassander eventually became a king of Macedonia. His daughter Eurydice married Ptolemy I Soter. One of his sons, Pleistarchus, was a general. His other son, Phillip, was also a military leader. Even the famous thinker Aristotle knew him. Aristotle even named Antipater as the person to look after his will.

At the end of his life, Antipater made a big choice. In 319 BC, he was near death. He chose an officer named Polyperchon to be the next leader. He did not choose his own son, Cassander, to take his place. This choice started a new period of fighting called the Second War of the Diadochi. This war lasted for four years. After that, Cassander took control of Macedon. He started a new group of rulers called the Antipatrid Dynasty.
