Delphi was a sacred place in ancient Greece.

It sat on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Many people believed Delphi was the very center of the world. They marked this spot with a stone called the Omphalos. This word actually means "navel."

The site was a major sanctuary for many people. It is now a protected World Heritage Site. It even forms part of the Parnassos National Park.

At this site, a priestess known as the Pythia lived.

She served as a famous oracle. People from the ancient classical world came to her. They wanted to ask about very important decisions. This made Delphi a central part of social and political life. Some stories say the site was once called Pytho. This name is linked to a serpent named Python. Legend says the god Apollo killed the serpent there.

Many Greek city-states built special buildings at Delphi.

These buildings were called treasuries. They were used to hold offerings for the god Apollo. Often, cities gave a "tithe" of their battle spoils. This meant they gave one-tenth of what they won. The Athenian Treasury is a famous example. It was built to remember a victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.

The Athenians also built a porch called a stoa in their own style.

Archaeologists have worked hard to uncover the secrets of Delphi.

In 1893, the French Archaeological School began a great excavation. They removed huge amounts of soil from landslides. They found the sanctuary of Apollo and a temple to Athena. They also found many sculptures and inscriptions. Later, people found buildings from the Roman era. These included the Eastern Baths and a large Roman Agora. They even found a grand mansion with four levels.

Today, you can visit the Delphi Archaeological Museum.

It holds many amazing things found at the site. You can see the Charioteer of Delphi, a famous statue. There are also golden treasures found under the Sacred Way. The museum even has the earliest known notation of a melody. Visitors can also see the ancient theatre. It sits high on the hill. It gives a great view of the whole valley below.
