history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Greek colonisation was a major movement of people. It happened mostly during the Archaic period. This was between the 8th and 6th centuries BC.

Unlike earlier times, this was not just tribes moving. It was an organised way to build new towns. These towns were often called apoikia. Most apoikia became strong, independent city-states. They were separate from their mother city, or metropolis.

They often used the same systems of government as their home. This helped spread Greek culture to new areas.

Many things pushed people to leave their homes. Some Greek cities grew too large for their land. This is called overpopulation. When there was not enough food, people looked for fertile soil. On the island of Thera, a long drought caused social unrest. This led to the founding of Cyrene in Libya.

Some people moved to escape fighting or unfair rules. For example, the Parthenians moved to found Taras. They were descendants of Spartan women who had no rights. Moving away helped stop more fighting in the mother city.

Trade was another huge reason for these new towns. Some colonies were built as trading hubs called emporion.

These were placed in smart locations to control trade routes. Many were built along the coasts of Italy and Sicily. These spots had many natural resources and good soil. They helped the Greeks build a large trade network. These hubs also helped the mother city grow wealthy through taxes. Some colonies even acted as military outposts to protect these paths.

Later on, a new kind of colony appeared. These were called cleruchies. They were made by the Athenian empire during the 5th and 4th centuries BC.

Unlike apoikia, these colonies depended on Athens for government. People living there were still Athenian citizens. They received land if they served in the military. Some say this helped the poor get land. Others think it was a way to protect grain ships. These towns provided wealth and food for Athens during wars.

Greek colonies reached many different places. They spread across the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

In the 8th century, Euboeans founded Pithecusae in Southern Italy. Later, Ionians settled in Thrace and near the Black Sea. The city of Abdera was a famous colony in Thrace. In Sicily, the Athenians tried to capture Syracuse. They wanted to gain power and control trade routes. These many settlements changed the map of the ancient world forever.
