Hadrian's Wall is a famous ancient structure in northern England.

It was built as a defensive fortification for the Roman province of Britannia. The wall served many different purposes for the Roman Empire. It acted as a physical barrier to slow down raiders. These raiders often crossed the line to take animals or treasure. The wall also helped the Romans monitor people moving through gates. These gates could be used as customs posts to collect taxes.

It was a very strong statement of Roman power and strength.

To make the wall hard to cross, the Romans used clever designs. They built large ditches in front of and behind the wall.

They also used pits called cippi. These pits held branches or small tree trunks with sharpened ends. These worked much like modern barbed wire to delay attackers. Soldiers lived in large forts along the wall to stay ready. They also stayed in smaller posts called milecastles.

Small watch-towers called turrets were placed every third of a mile. These turrets provided shelter and a place to watch the land.

Construction of the wall began in AD 122.

It was ordered by the Emperor Hadrian. He wanted to protect the empire and keep its borders intact. The wall stretched 80 Roman miles across the island. This is about 73 modern miles or 117 kilometres. It ran from Wallsend on the River Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west.

Some parts of the wall were originally made of turf and timber. These were later replaced by stone to make them stronger.

Building such a huge wall was a massive job for the soldiers.

Three Roman legions worked on the project. These groups were the Legio II Augusta, Legio VI Victrix, and Legio XX Valeria Victrix. In total, about 15,000 soldiers helped build the wall. These men were not just fighters for the empire. They also worked as surveyors, engineers, masons, and carpenters. Plans changed during the building process to save resources.

Some sections are ten Roman feet wide, while others are only eight feet wide.

Today, Hadrian's Wall is a very important historical site. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Many people visit the wall as tourists to see the ruins. You can walk along the Hadrian's Wall Path to see the landscape. Some of the old forts are even open to the public. Most of the original stone was taken long ago to build roads and houses. However, you can still see the footings and some reconstructed parts. It remains a major icon of British history.
