Londinium was a very important city in Roman Britain.

It served as the capital for much of the time the Romans ruled the land. The city was built near a special spot on the River Thames. This spot was a ford, which is a shallow place where people can cross a river. Because of this, the city became a major port and a place where many roads met.

It was a busy center for trade and business for many years.

Building the city happened in several stages. First, the Romans arrived in Britain around 43 AD. Historians think the settlement began shortly after that, around 47 to 50 AD. One of the oldest things found is a timber drain from 47 AD.

The city grew around the river and the roads. It was a place where merchants from all over the Roman Empire came to sell goods. This made the community very diverse and full of life.

History shows that the city faced many hard times. In 60 or 61 AD, a queen named Boudica led a rebellion. Her people, the Iceni, fought against the Roman forces. The Romans had to leave the city, and Londinium was burned down.

After the Romans defeated Boudica, they rebuilt the city. It recovered quickly and grew much larger than before. By the end of the 1st century, it was the largest city in Britain.

At its height, Londinium was a huge and busy place. In the 2nd century, it may have had 30,000 to 60,000 people.

It had grand public buildings like a forum and an amphitheatre. Emperor Hadrian even visited the city in 122 AD.

Even after a major fire, the people rebuilt the city again. Between 190 and 225 AD, the Romans built a large defensive wall to protect the land side.

This wall helped define the edges of the city for 1,600 years.

Today, we can still see traces of Londinium in our modern world. The name of the city changed over time to become London. Many of the streets we use today follow the paths of the old Roman roads. The old city wall still marks the area we call the City of London.
