Roman Britain

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Roman Britain was a special part of the Roman Empire. It covered a large part of the island of Great Britain. This period lasted from AD 43 until AD 410. Before the Romans arrived, people lived in different Celtic tribes. Some of these tribes, called the Belgae, had already crossed the sea.

The Romans brought new ways of living to the island. They introduced better farming and new ways to build cities. They also started making things in factories. This changed how people lived every day.

The Romans took control through many different steps. First, Julius Caesar visited in 55 and 54 BC. He did not stay to rule, but he made connections. Later, in AD 43, Emperor Claudius sent four legions to invade. These soldiers fought many battles to win the land. They defeated tribes like the Catuvellauni near the Thames river.

The Romans then organized the land into a province. They built strong forts to keep order. They also built long roads to help people travel.

Many brave people fought to protect their homes. A famous queen named Boudica led a large revolt. She was the widow of a king named Prasutagus. The Romans had treated her people very unfairly. Boudica and her followers destroyed several Roman cities. They attacked places like Camulodunum and Londinium.

However, the Roman army fought back very hard. They won a big battle at Watling Street. This stopped the revolt from spreading further. After this, the Romans continued to grow their power.

As the empire grew, the Romans built huge things. Two famous walls were built to protect the north. One was called Hadrian's Wall. The other was the Antonine Wall. The first wall was made of stone. The second wall was mostly made of turf.

In the north, a leader named Agricola led more conquests. He fought a battle at Mons Graupius in AD 84. He faced a leader named Calgacus and his army. This helped the Romans reach much further into the land.

Life in Roman Britain was very different from before. People used new tools and lived in organized towns. Roman citizens came from many different parts of the empire. They brought their own customs and ideas with them. Even the goddess Britannia became a symbol for the land.

Eventually, the Roman army had to leave in AD 410. This happened because of many invasions from outside groups. After they left, new native kingdoms began to form. These new groups started what is called Sub-Roman Britain.
