People call it Glen Albyn or Glen More. These names come from the Gaelic language. It runs in a very straight line. The glen starts at Inverness on the Moray Firth. It ends at Fort William by Loch Linnhe. This valley splits the Highlands into two parts. The Grampian Mountains sit to the southeast. The Northwest Highlands sit to the northwest.

Most of the glen is filled with water. A series of lochs, or lakes, sit in a row. Rivers connect these lochs together. From the northeast, the water starts with the River Ness. It flows into Loch Dochfour and then Loch Ness. Next comes the River Oich and Loch Oich. Then comes Loch Lochy and the River Lochy. Finally, the water reaches Loch Linnhe.

Many people have used this path through history. In the 1700s, the glen was very important. It helped control the Highland clans during the Jacobite risings. Towns like Fort William and Fort Augustus were built here. Fort George sits just northeast of Inverness. In 1896, a railway was built. It ran from the south to Loch Ness. That railway closed in 1947. In 2002, a new path opened. It is called the Great Glen Way.

Even though the glen is beautiful, the Earth moves here. Small earthquakes happen near the Great Glen Fault. Engineers must plan for this seismic activity. They must design things to stay safe. For example, the Kessock Bridge has seismic buffers. These buffers help the bridge during movements.
