The glen follows a crack in the Earth. We call this the Great Glen Fault. Much of the glen is filled with lakes. These lakes are called lochs. Rivers connect the lochs together. One famous lake is Loch Ness. You can travel through the glen on a road. You can also use the Caledonian Canal. A long path called the Great Glen Way is also there. People use it to walk or bike. Long ago, towns like Fort Augustus were built here. They helped control the local clans. Even small earthquakes happen near the fault. Engineers must think about this when they build bridges.
