The lake is long and thin. It flows from the southwest to the northeast. It is part of the Caledonian Canal. This canal links the east coast to the west coast.

Loch Ness is very deep. It is the second deepest lake in Scotland. It holds a huge amount of water. It has more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined! The water looks dark and murky. This is because the soil around it has a lot of peat.

Many people visit the loch to see Urquhart Castle. The castle sits on the western shore. People also go on boat trips to look for a monster. They call the monster Nessie.

There is one small island in the lake. It is called Cherry Island. It is a man-made island. It was likely made a long time ago during the Iron Age. A stone castle once stood there. Many villages sit near the water, too. One village is called Fort Augustus. It sits at the southern end of the loch.
