It sits in a place called the Rough Bounds of Lochaber. This loch is the fifth-largest by surface area in Scotland. It covers 31 square kilometers of land. Most importantly, it is the deepest freshwater body in the British Isles. The water reaches a maximum depth of 310 meters.

The surface of the loch sits above sea level. It is a special place for science because the water is very clear. This happens because there are very few nutrients in the water.

Glaciers helped create this deep basin a very long time ago. Experts think glacial action happened around 10,000 years ago. Some estimates suggest erosion took between 67,000 and 150,000 years. The loch is part of the Morar Group of sediments. It sits on an east-west fault line in the ground. The River Meoble flows into the loch on the southern side. It carries water from Loch Beoraid into the main body. At the western end, the River Morar flows out. This river is only a few hundred meters long. It is one of the shortest rivers in the British Isles.

One famous island in the loch is named Eilean Bàn.

Local people used this island to graze their cattle herds. In the 19th century, people began planting many trees there. Today, the island is covered in a thick forest. The island also has a very important history. Bishop James Gordon used it to start a secret Catholic seminary. This was a place for religious learning. It stayed a secret chapel and library for a long time. You can still see some of the old foundation stones on the island today.

In June 1746, a serious event happened at the loch. Government soldiers and sailors arrived to find people hiding on Eilean Bàn. They were looking for Bishop Hugh MacDonald and Jacobite leaders. The soldiers reached the island and destroyed the chapel. They also burned many books and papers. This was a very big loss for scholars today. During this time, they also captured Lord Lovat. He was hiding in a cave in nearby Glen Meoble.

Some items, like green vestments from 1745, were saved from the destruction.

Loch Morar is a place of many stories and uses. Some people say a monster named Mòrag lives in the water. This is similar to the stories told about Loch Ness. The loch also helps provide power to the area. A hydroelectric power station was built on the River Morar in 1948.

Near the western end, the village of Morar sits by the coast. People can travel there using the A830 road. The area is a mix of steep banks, thick forests, and deep, clear water.
