These lakes sit in a low valley. Rugged mountains rise up all around the water. This mountain range is called MacGillycuddy's Reeks. It includes Carrauntoohil, which is the highest mountain in Ireland. Other peaks include Purple Mountain, Mangerton Mountain, and Torc Mountain. You can see the whole area from a spot called Ladies View.

This name came after Queen Victoria visited in 1861. Her ladies-in-waiting thought it was the finest view in the land.

There are three main lakes in this group. The first is Lough Leane, which is the largest. It is also the northernmost lake.

It is the largest body of fresh water in the whole region. The River Laune flows out of this lake to the north-west. This river goes toward Killorglin and into Dingle Bay. Many small islands with trees sit in the water. One island is called Innisfallen. It holds the ruins of an old place called Innisfallen Abbey. You can also find Ross Island near the eastern edge. This peninsula was used for metalwork during the Copper Age.

Muckross Lake is the middle lake of the three. Some people also call it Middle Lake or Torc Lake.

It sits just south of Lough Leane. A small peninsula keeps the two lakes apart. You can cross this area using Brickeen Bridge. This is a stone bridge with arches. Muckross Lake is very special because it is the deepest lake in Ireland. There is a paved hiking trail that goes all the way around it. This path lets people walk and see the scenery up close.

The third lake is the Upper Lake. It is the smallest of the three lakes.

It sits at the very southern end of the group. A long, winding channel separates it from the other lakes. The lakes are a very scenic attraction for many visitors. People come to see the mountains and the water. The area feels very natural and wild. It is a famous part of the Irish landscape.

Local stories also make these lakes feel magical. Folklore says the lakes were the home of Kate Kearney. She was said to look for an enchanted chieftain named O'Donaghue. Many poems and pictures have been made about her. The poet Letitia Elizabeth Landon wrote about her. She also wrote poems to go with art by William Henry Bartlett. You might see her name on a cottage at the Gap of Dunloe. However, that lady is not the same Kate Kearney from the lake stories. The lakes hold many layers of history and myth.
