Glacial lake

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A glacial lake is a body of water made by glaciers. These huge masses of ice shape the Earth in many ways. They can carve out deep holes in the ground. When the ice melts, the water fills those holes to create a lake.

Some lakes are very large. The Great Lakes are the largest glacial lakes in the world.

Long ago, a lake called Lake Agassiz held more water than all the lakes on Earth today. These lakes are important because they store fresh water for people to use.

How do these lakes form? It happens in a few steps. First, a moving glacier scrapes and erodes the land. This creates a depression, which is a low spot or a hollow. Near the end of the last ice age, glaciers began to retreat. They often left big chunks of ice in the hollows between hills. As the ice age ended, these ice chunks melted. The melted ice then filled the low spots to make a lake.

These lakes often sit near hills called drumlins or piles of rock called moraines.

Scientists study the bottom of these lakes to learn about the past. The bottom is covered in layers of sediment, which is fine material like mud or sand. These layers can show how much the land eroded over time. Glaciers crush rocks into a very fine powder called rock flour. This powder can float in the water and make the lake look green. This happens because the minerals help algae, which are tiny plants, grow.

The layers also hold records of old weather and even human activities like cutting down forests.

Life in a glacial lake can be a hard job. Most of these lakes are oligotrophic, meaning they have low nutrient levels. This makes it difficult for many living things to survive. Only species that are cold-tolerant can live in the chilly water. However, some places are much busier. In Iceland, the Jökulsárlón lagoon sits by the Atlantic Ocean. Tides bring fish to the edge of the ice. This attracts predators like seals and birds like the arctic tern.

People use and visit these lakes for many different reasons. Some lakes provide electricity through hydropower. Others are beautiful places for tourists to visit. Thousands of people go to the Jökulsárlón lagoon in Iceland every year. In Argentina, people visit the Argentino glacial lake to see ice arches collapse.

Some lakes are also very special for religion. In the Himalayas, many lakes are considered sacred. For example, Manasarovar Lake is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bon. Many people go on long journeys called pilgrimages to visit these holy waters.
