First, the Oscans built five small villages there. Later, the Greeks arrived around 740 BC. They built the Doric Temple in the city. Then, the Etruscans took control of the area. They built a simple market square called a forum. The Samnites also ruled the city for a time. They made the town much larger and stronger. Finally, Pompeii became a Roman colony.

In 79 AD, a huge event changed everything.

The volcano named Mount Vesuvius erupted suddenly. It sent out thick layers of ash and pumice. This material buried the entire city and its people. The ash acted like a protective cover. It kept the buildings and objects safe for centuries. This event froze the city in time. It created a unique look at Roman life.

Archaeologists have learned many facts from the ruins.

The city had between 10,000 and 20,000 residents. People found many things like wooden tools and art. They even found graffiti carved into the walls. This writing shows how people spoke in daily life. Experts used ash to make moulds of human figures. These moulds show the final moments of the people. Many items were found in homes and businesses.

People began to find Pompeii in the late 1500s.
