His father was a wealthy man who worked with leather. Cleon was different from other leaders. He gained power by helping poor citizens. He gave them more pay for jury work. This helped many people earn a living.

Cleon also led Athens in a big war. This was the Peloponnesian War against Sparta. He was a very strong speaker in the Assembly. He fought for a tough military plan. Cleon helped win a battle on the island of Sphacteria. He promised to take the island in 20 days. He kept his word and won.

Not everyone liked Cleon. Two famous writers wrote bad things about him. One was a historian named Thucydides. The other was a playwright named Aristophanes. They thought he was a violent man. Some people think they were just being unfair. They might have had a personal grudge against him.

Cleon died in 422 BC. He was killed during a battle at Amphipolis. This happened while he was leading an army. His death helped lead to peace between Athens and Sparta.
