Phormio was a famous leader from Athens. He was a great admiral. An admiral is a leader of ships. He lived a long time ago. In 432 BC, he led 1600 soldiers. They helped at a place called Potidaea. He built a wall to help his men. Later, he led many ships in the sea.

In 428 BC, Phormio faced a big challenge. He had only 20 ships. His enemies had 47 ships. The enemy ships formed a circle. Their front parts faced out. Phormio used a smart plan. He sailed his ships around them. He made their circle tighter. Then, the wind blew hard. The enemy crews got stuck. Their oars got tangled. Phormio's ships won the battle.

He won again soon after. This time, he fought 77 ships. His small force won that battle too. These wins kept Athens strong. After he died, Athens honored him. They built a statue of him. They also gave him a state funeral. His son, Asopius, also led ships in the war.
