A trireme was a fast warship from ancient times.

It was used near the Mediterranean Sea. The name comes from its three rows of oars. On each side, three men sat in a line. One man pulled each oar to move the ship.

These ships were very agile. This means they could turn quickly in the water. They were the main warships for a long time. They helped groups like the Greeks and Persians in big wars. Athens used many triremes to build a strong empire.

Building a trireme was a difficult task. Builders had to keep the ship light but strong. They used special cables called hypozomata. These cables acted like strong tendons. They ran along the middle of the ship. They helped the hull stay stiff during battles.

Triremes needed a lot of care. If they stayed in the sea too long, they became waterlogged. This made them heavy and hard to move. To stop this, sailors pulled the ships onto the beach at night. Because they were made of light wood, as few as 140 men could carry them.
